A dozen up-and-comers face off in Saturday’s Group 2 $200,000 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) on way to a possible run back at the track over the mile in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) in a fortnight.
Four of the past five Flight Stakes winners came off a lead-up run in the Tea Rose Stakes, meaning there will be plenty of interest in the Group 2 on the weekend.
Leading the latest Tea Rose Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au in a tight affair for top spot in betting is the Bjorn Baker-trained Champagne Cuddles ($3.40).
This daughter of Not A Single Doubt finally gets out to 1400m, which she looks to have been waiting for after placings in the Silver Shadow Stakes (3rd) and Furious Stakes (2nd) behind Golden Rose-bound Formality this time in.
The extra distance works in her favour on Saturday and she will be hard to hold out late.
The big danger looking at the Tea Rose Stakes betting markets at $3.60 is Tulip in a gun barrier four draw with Hugh Bowman, riding super mare Winx in the following race on the card, booked for the ride.
Tulip represents the Lindsay Park stable and comes off a narrow first-up loss when a nostril separated her and the winner Roomooz over 1200m at Moonee Valley on August 26.
Second-up this well-bred Pierro filly will be improving, chasing her first win since the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) back in March.
She also boasts a Golden Slipper third to She Will Reign and was far from disgraced in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) as a two-year-old behind Invader for fifth.
So will the top two fancies run the quinella for the punters or is there an upset Tea Rose Stakes result pending from the likes of Gai Waterhouse’s in-form Pandemonium ($9.50) chasing her third win on the trot, Acqume ($12) in the outside alley who also comes off impressive back-to-back wins this prep or the untapped Regimen ($15) for Godolphin?
1st
#9 Pandemonium ($9.50)
Think the bookies have the right fillies under double-figures in the markets, but the value looks to lie in this Waterhouse-trained miler who is on way to handing Sydney’s leading lady of racing an incredible ninth Flight Stakes win. This daughter of Sebring has won two easier races in Sydney this time in and is back up in class out to show she can match it with the proven Group fillies of the season. Latest win was over the Warwick Farm mile and no doubt that’s her pet distance. She drops to 1400m here, but gets a gun run from barrier three and if Josh Parr does a Red Excitement-like ride up front, she’ll take some running down.
2nd
#2 Champagne Cuddles ($3.50)
Obvious favourite and huge hope for the punters based on what she’s done to date. Opening two starts as a two-year-old were won in impressive fashion and she handles all going. Versatile and on the improve. Only a quarter-length third first-up in the Silver Shadow then a whisker away second in the Furious Stakes. Step-up from 1200m to 1400m will be key to her winning chances in this.

#1 Tulip ($3.60)
Comes via a different lead-up having resumed in Melbourne and so is out to frank the form from further south. Only run at Randwick produced the ATC Sires’ fifth behind Invader over this distance at the end of her two-year-old campaign. A Group 2 Rosehill winner over a number of these and the Golden Slipper third on a mud track showed her class.
