The spring racing action at Moonee Valley gets underway on Saturday, October 22, at 12:10pm (AEDT) and the line-up runs until 5:45pm (AEDT) with seven Group status races for punters to sink their teeth into.

Of course all other events on the Cox Plate Day card are just fillers compared to the meeting’s feature – the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m).

The Australasian weight-for-age championship runs as Moonee Valley Race 9 at 5:00pm (AEDT) and a below capacity Cox Plate field of 10 runners is led by Winx.

Chris Waller’s champion are returns 12 months on from her barnstorming 4.75 length victory in the classic last season and she is odds-on and firming at $1.80 through Ladbrokes.com.au – so make sure you take her at Enhanced Odds (T&Cs apply).

Outside of Winx stealing the show in the Cox Plate, there’s value to be had across the card and below we’ve got our exclusive Cox Plate Day Best Bets for you to lock in at Ladbrokes.com.au and finish the day on top!

In The Big One (Race 9) – 2016 Cox Plate

#3 Hartnell ($3.60) Each Way

We’re sorry, but it really is hard to think past Winx winning. She is a confirmed superstar and deserving of her champion status that will be firmly stamped in the history book when she goes back-to-back in the Cox Plate. Or should we say if? Nothing is a sure thing in horse racing and if the glamour mare has her flag lowered, we want something to wipe up the sadness with. Money will do the job so we’ll take the Turnbull Stakes winner Hartnell, who is the most impressive animal getting about, Each Way – just in case!

Better Than Bank Interest (Race 6) – 2016 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic

#1 I Am A Star ($2.50) to Win

One of the shorties on the card is this Shane Nichols-trained filly who firming in her price to beat a field of her own kind over a mile in the Fillies Classic. She won first-up in Group 3 company and is now five runs in. She comes off a second to Global Glamour in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) and while on paper she should be nearing the end of her campaign, reports are she’s still licking the bin clean. She is down in class and only has to do what she did there to win this and gets the gun gate (2) to boot.

Best Upset To Win (Race 5) – 2016 Tesio Stakes

#9 Alaskan Rose ($9.50)

Admittedly she was better value at double-figures earlier in the week, but this market mover is still the best upset of the day. Lady Le Fay ($2.40) for Chris Waller is all the rage in betting on this mares’ showdown, but Alaskan Rose gets the run from barrier three third-up and will be reaching her peak. She comes off a fifth in the Ladies Day Vase, beaten under three lengths, and gets another got at the mile now firing fit.

Best Roughie To Place (Race 8) – 2016 Moonee Valley Gold Cup

#5 Authoritarian ($17)

Taking the firming favourite and Sydney Cup winner Gallante ($3.70) for the win, but to finish in the money at a juicy price the lead-up form of this Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Authorized gelding is good enough for us. He has won his past two on the trot, handling a Heavy Bendigo track over 2400m two back for a big 3.25 length before taking out the Moe Cup (2050m) on October 13. Goes up in weight and class, but can run in the money especially if he gets a Soft (9-4-0-0) track.

Last Of The Day (Race 10) – 2016 Moonee Valley Vase

#1 Prized Icon ($4.60)

He is the firming market mover in an open affair, but still good value near enough to $5. James Cummings-trained More Than Ready colt is a Group 1 winner over the mile in Sydney as a two-year-old in the autumn and this campaign has been on the improve. Last two starts produced third place efforts when beaten under a length all up, including the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) behind Yankee Rose at Randwick on October 8. She goes to the Cox Plate as a genuine place chance behind Winx, so think this horse can handle a Group 2 field over the same distance.
